Recent versions of Windows have been plagued by a small bug that appears as the language bar icon disappearing from the notification area. And although this error has long been known to developers, Microsoft is still in no hurry to fix it, apparently believing that it does not deserve special attention. Most often, the sudden disappearance of the layout switching icon occurs during system failures, virus attacks, the use of optimizers, and less often when installing new programs.

The error may also appear when hiding the language bar. Once the panel is hidden, the user cannot return it to its place due to the lack of appropriate controls. At the same time, the ability to switch keyboard layouts remains. Restarting the computer in such cases does not always help. Alternatively, you can try rolling back the system to an earlier restore point or using these three techniques.

Method one. Checking system settings

First of all, check in the system settings whether the language bar is enabled at all. The corresponding settings are located in the Control Panel, in the section.

In the window that opens, switch to the tab "Language bar" and make sure the setting is enabled.

If not, turn it on and save.

Method two. Reinstalling input languages

As a rule, Russian-speaking Windows users have two input languages enabled in their system: Russian and English. If only one language is enabled, the language switcher will not appear at all. However, despite the fact that the user uses both languages, the system for some reason “forgets” about this and begins to believe that only one language is used. This error can be corrected by reinstalling the input languages.

To do this, in the “Language” section of the Control Panel, you need to select the element with the English layout, and then delete his.

Then immediately click and select in the window that opens

and add it again.

If it was not possible to solve the problem in this way, move on to the third option.

Method three. Adding the ctfmon.exe process to startup

As in earlier versions of the OS in Windows 8 and 8.1, the file is responsible for displaying the language bar ctfmon.exe. By default, it should start when the system starts, but it may happen that for some reason it “crashed” from startup. To return it to startup, we will use a regular registry editor. In the editor you will need to find the branch HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run and check whether it contains a parameter pointing to ctfmon.exe. If there is no such parameter, you will need to create it manually.

Right-click on an empty space in the editor window and select "Create string parameter".

In the Windows 8 Control Panel, developers have changed the path to language settings. This innovation again makes Windows 8 somehow unusual and you need to get used to it and look for what to do. In this article I will describe where these language settings are now located and what can be done with them.

You can access all language settings in Windows 8 at once by clicking “Language Settings” in the language bar, or search in the Control Panel Clock, language and region, and then choose Language. A window will open in which you can only change the language settings. those. delete, add and play around with pre-installed languages in Settings. If you want more, then click on the “Advanced parameters” link in the left panel, which will give you additional settings (logical, isn’t it).

In the list, in the “Switch input methods” item, check the box “Allow you to choose an input method for each application.”

How to change the key combination to switch input language in Windows 8?
The standard way to switch is Alt + Shift, but many people prefer Ctrl + Shift. What's the difference? With the first combination you change the layout in the program, and with the second - in the system. Or vice versa. I don't remember...

In the language settings, click "Advanced options", in the "Switch input methods" section, click "Change language bar keyboard shortcuts."

How to change the keyboard shortcut to switch input language in Windows 8?
In Windows 8, instead of the language bar, a new language switch indicator is displayed (in the screenshot on the left), and the bar itself (in the screenshot on the right) is disabled.

To completely disable any display of the input language in the notification area, you need to do a not entirely obvious operation - turn on the language bar and make it hidden!
In the advanced options, check the box next to “Use the language bar if available”, click “Options”.

This is a toolbar that automatically appears on the desktop when you add text input services, such as input languages, keyboard layouts, handwriting recognition, speech recognition, or input method editors (IMEs). The Language Bar provides a quick way to change your input language or keyboard layout right from your desktop. The language bar can be moved anywhere on the screen, minimized to the taskbar, or hidden.

The language bar in Windows 8 has undergone some changes; now you can switch the language/keyboard layout by pressing the Win + Space keys. To open access to all language bar settings, you can use the Control Panel (if the language bar icon is hidden). To do this, press the Win + I keys and select Control Panel. In the Control Panel, select "Clock, Language and Regions" and select "Language". Or select " Language settings"" in the language bar

We do this so that the language of the current layout is saved for each application. If you need to change the keyboard shortcut to switch the input language, select the item " Change language bar keyboard shortcuts"

In the window that opens, select " Change keyboard shortcut"

After selecting the keyboard shortcut that is convenient for you, press OK

If you want to hide Language bar, then go back to the window" Text input languages and services" and select the "" tab.

All that remains is to check the box " Hidden". After this, the language bar will be hidden, but switching the language will remain the one that is set.
